Why and how the self restrain important and find relevant suttas in the Ti Pitaka that the Buddha talked about.
Posted in buddhist Ethics
There are many suttas that talks about the importance of self
restrain some on the suttas like satipatthana sutta, Mahasatipatthana sutta, Muni
Sutta, Dhammapada and etc.
Buddhism
is a religion of tolerance because it preaches a life of self-restraint.
Buddhism teaches a life based not on rules but on principles. Hatred does not
cease by hatred; by love alone does it cease.' Such is said by the Buddha for
welfare of one and others. Even the first verse of the Dhammapada says thus:
All states have mind as their forerunner, mind is their chief, and they are
mind-made. If one speaks or acts, with a defiled mind, suffering follows one
even as the wheel follows the hoof of the draught-ox. So we see that Buddha has
always asked to keep control. In order to
overcome greed, hatred, and delusion, a person needs to change not only his or
her personal conduct or lifestyle, but also the system that creates them. The
Five Precepts shown by the Buddha also talks about self
control. Buddhists never really stops studying the suffering of
oneself and that of other people. This forms a central focus of the religion,
its practice and its philosophy so to study about suffering one must experience
suffering though limited self control. Buddhism is
a religion of self-transformation and self-improvement, through
application of continuous effort of self control. Muni sutta says thus about self control
“Self-restrained, he does no evil. Young and
middle-aged, the sage self-controlled, never angered, he angers none: The
enlightened call him a sage.” Even Buddhavagga of Dhammapada says what all the
Buddhas say about restraint thus: Sabba paapassa akaranam kusalassa upasampada
saacitta pariyoda panam etam buddhaano sasanam, Avoid all evil or akusala deed
with restrained mind and purify your mind this is the teaching of all the
Buddhas. This stanza is to show the importance of self development for
everyone. Self development means personal responsibility for one’s own learning
and development through a process of taking action. According to satipatthana
sutta we have develop our mind through meditation. Sitting meditation and
mindfulness will help each and every being to become more loving,
compassionate, joyous, composed, generous, disciplined, patient, courageous and
mindful. Buddha even in his death bed said that appamadena sampadetha. Live diligently
and develop yourself. A fully integrated liberated person has a very self
controlled and development.
