It is simply defined as how the leader affects followers who are intended to trust, admire and respect. It means increasing their awareness of task importance and value. It means to get the followers to focus first on team or organizational goals, rather than their own interests. It also means of activating their higher-order needs. Transformational leadership theory is a path to positive changes in those who follow. Transformational leadership theory produces energy, enthusiasm and passion. What Is Transformational Leadership theory?
Transformational theory means an agent of change. One who inspires an activist, or one who leads many and even a teacher. It is a complete relationship between leaders and followers. Gandhi elevated his followers to a higher moral ground through non-violence. Transformational leadership starts with the development of a vision a view of future, excites and converts potential followers. But vision is mixed with a high moral value for the group. How can we see it?
We can see it when “leaders and followers make each other to advance to a higher level of moral and motivation." Through the strength of their vision and personality, transformational leadership is able to inspire followers to change expectations, perceptions and motivations to work towards common goals. Transformational leaders garner trust, respect and admiration from their followers. Transformational leaders are in demand all over the world. New trends and developments in different areas call for a kind of leadership that transforms lives and makes meaningful changes to the world.
Four components of Transformational Leadership theory.
Intellectual Stimulation – Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo; they also encourage creativity among followers. The leader encourages followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn. The leader looks at the situation of the followers. He acts as a coach and listens to the concerns and questions of the followers. He provides support--emotional and moral--as well as the resources needed to achieve tasks. He also communicates effectively and challenges the followers to do more while at the same time maintaining balance in their lives.
Individualized Consideration – Transformational leadership also involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive relationships, transformational leaders keep lines of communication open so that followers feel free to share ideas and so that leaders can offer direct recognition of each follower’s unique contributions. The leader engages the intelligence and wisdom of his followers. He does not make the decision alone. Rather, he gathers inputs and suggestions and makes sure that the voices of the followers are heard. He also nurtures creativity among his subordinates so that the problems or tasks at hand could be easily dealt with and solved
Inspirational Motivation – Transformational leaders have a clear vision that they are able to articulate to followers. These leaders are also able to help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals. The leader does not only impose his vision. Rather, he "sells" them to the followers so they could be passionate for that vision, as well. By inspiring and motivating the followers, the leader provides purpose and meaning to the group, which will drive it forward toward the achievement of its vision.
Idealized Influence – The transformational leaders serves as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate the leader and internalize his or her ideals. The leader also becomes the ideal model for followers through his character, his commitment to excellence and ethical behavior. Through this behavior, the leader gains the respect and trust of the followers.
